Add new virtual disk in XEN \"hot\

It is usual that after several years the space forecasts in a virtual machine are exceeded, in many cases because the project for which it has been destined is being a success and requires a larger storage size. What in principle may be a joy, also involves extra effort, since if the machine is in production, and we have more users, it means that we cannot turn off the machine for an hour to perform maintenance tasks. Thanks to XEN we can change the virtual hard disk without having excessive problems

SSHFS, mounting directories via ssh

Secure SHell FileSystem (SSHFS) is a file system for Linux (and other operating systems with a FUSE implementation, such as Mac OS X), capable of displaying files on a remote system as if it were just another folder on your computer using secure access.

In this way, a user can work on a series of files on another computer as if it were in local mode. For its operation, only the installation of an SSH server is necessary on the remote machine. Once it is perfectly configured on the local machine, we proceed to the SSHFS installation:

noVNC, HTML5-based VNC client

noVNC is a VNC client implemented using HTML 5 technologies, specifically Canvas and WebSockets (“wss://’ supports encryption). noVNC is licensed under the LGPLv3.

Browser requirements for noVNC

-   HTML5 Canvas: Most browsers have had a lot of development in this regard for quite some time. The last one to join has been Internet Explorer 9 (finally).

-   HTML5 WebSockets: For browsers that have not incorporated WebSockets support, the project includes web-socket-js, a WebSockets emulator with Adobe Flash.

Change UID of a user

It may be the case that, for example, in a server migration, you have to concatenate machines, which implies that the users must continue to exist on both servers, but this time on a single machine. This implies that we must change the UID and GID of each of them (at least on one machine) to avoid major problems.

One of the initial trends is to change the identifiers directly in the /etc/passwd files or in the /etc/group, a serious mistake, since for example the files in which said user has permission will be lost, leaving the previous identifier.

Auditfi code released

Auditfi has exceeded 1000 downloads, and as a thank you there is another little gift, and this is the total release of the code so that everyone can study it, and above all improve it. There are many more networks that can be included using patterns, dictionary or even brute force.

Project URL

https://github.com/Thempra/Auditfi

It has been located in the GitHub repositories, to manage it you can do it through Eclipse with the EGit plugin. As you can see, it is a very simple and easy-to-understand application. I hope you are encouraged to improve the project.

Backtrack 5 course, auditing the world

Backtrack is a LiveCD distribution, as well as an installable one, that compiles a complete range of utilities to audit various systems. Although it is well known for being prepared for auditing Wi-Fi networks, it is more interesting to review the rest of the tools it offers us to work with all technologies. Taking advantage of the fact that Backtrack 5 R1 has just been published, I present to you the Mexican Organization of Ethical Hackers that has published a simple course to get started in understanding this tool, very basic, but useful for those who want to enter this world.

inSSIDer, wifi scanner

To do good as well as to do evil, a Wi-Fi network scanner is almost essential, and although the shell attracts a lot, seeing moving colors has attracted us all since childhood.

inSSIDer is a beautiful, simple scanner, although with a technical visualization, and above all multiplatform.

When setting up a Wi-Fi network, whether your home or a more extensive one, it is advisable to view the frequency spectrum that covers said area. And since today our eyes are not capable of switching to Wi-Fi mode, with this program we can make the task easier in a graphic and simple way.

Auditfi 1.0, auditing your Wi-Fi network from Android

A few weeks ago, my colleague Craswer and I bet how easy it would be to implement the security flaw in the Neikokz generators, on the Jazztel and Telefonica or Movistar routers, and in less than an hour, we obtained the result that we present to you. Now, by popular request we have decided to upload it to the Market.

Although there are several programs to audit the security of your router, here we leave you the Auditfi (Wifi Audit**) which is not only prettier, “the best”, but we accept your feedback to improve it based on your needs.

Set up a proxy with SSH and SOCK5

The idea is, if for example we have a blocked connection, or we want to load a website from the office as if we were a client, or simply change IP. What we must do is generate a tunnel which takes us directly to the exit point and from local connect via proxy to this tunnel.

TTF Fonts in J2ME with a Canvas

In my latest experiments with J2ME I have found that the font classes ( javax.microedition.lcdui.Font ) are quite short to obtain a fairly nice design.

It is based on three types (FACE_MONOSPACE, FACE_PROPORTIONAL, FACE_SYSTEM), three styles (STYLE_BOLD, STYLE_ITALIC, STYLE_PLAIN, STYLE_UNDERLINED) and three sizes (SIZE_LARGE, SIZE_MEDIUM,SIZE_SMALL) . This today is surpassed even by any Web editor.

We should not despair or think that  ….. “Java is shabby and ugly” ….. since this depends more on the capabilities of the developer/designer than on the language itself that we are dealing with. That’s why the guys at 59Pixels have released a 59Fonts library, capable of saving us a lot of headaches.

This afternoon I compiled the latest version directly from the SVN of Monodevelop, and after playing with the latest features, I decided to put together a small application to show how it works under this environment.

This is a development under Mono + Gtk#, without having to create an entire tableau, since with the Fixed container we are allowed to drag them inside the panel, as if it were a Grid, and that is why I have reprogrammed this application again. To obtain the data we use a Webservice showing the weather for each city in real time.

WIFISLAX, WEPbreaker for dummies

New distribution for system audits and also national!! It is one more step from the offspring of many others such as Auditor, iWhax, BackTracks, … but with the advantage of the latest drivers for Wi-Fi cards, with the possibility of injecting traffic into the typical Intel ones on laptops.

Apart from the classic tools that we had in its predecessors, a notable novelty in the software part is the script that can be started directly from the menu, from which we continue with a wizard of the type… shall we scan?? Who do we attack? How do you want us to give him his hair??? I give you the key? All this by simply selecting option 1,2,3, …. from the menu and clicking “Enter”. Not only that but to the point of being able to disconnect others from the wireless network.

Gtk# Installer & Mono, Add-in for Visual Studio 2005

These guys from Mono are non-stop, after having achieved full compatibility with the .NET 2.0 framework with version 1.2, they continue forward with the possibility of compiling within our favorite IDE. The truth is that this monster tool like VS2005 can do everything, and they have created an Add-in for this situation.

First with Gtk# Installer for .NET Framework Runtime with which we can have references to libraries such as

	* Mono.Cairo.dll
	* Mono.GetOptions.dll
	* Mono.Posix.dll
	* Mono.Security.dll
	* Novell.Directory.Ldap.dll

But it’s not over yet, we also have Mono Combined Experimental Installer which is the previous version of Gtk# but together with the Mono framework and the Add-in, you directly compile with VS!!

XNA on PS3 with Linux+Mono?

For those who do not know it XNA is the technology that Microsoft has released for the development of video games, facilitating the task with respect to the hard work that programming with DirectX meant. In this way, with a few minor modifications, the game will be compatible for both PC and XBOX 360.

Now let’s think… Would it be possible to bring it to the PS3? PS3 runs like Linux operating systems, there are even several HowTo on how to make it run Fedora, if we install Mono 1.2 on it we achieve full compatibility with all software that attacks Microsoft’s Framework 2.0, we are doing well, apparently we have just set up this console as a desktop machine, well one more step…… Mono.Xna !!!

Microsoft joins forces with Novell

Although I know that the news is a few weeks old, I can’t resist starting my adventures in the world of Blogs with something as beautiful as this pact that no one trusts. On the other hand, it gives me so much hope, given my desire to unite engineers (people who engineer, not necessarily graduates) under the same roof and that there are no Taliban, no dark side, or the like… (sniff, sniff, what an idealist I have become).

WPF in Mono

Are we going to have WPF also in Mono? of course, those responsible, the project Olive, who will be in charge of the implementation of:

  • Workflow APIs
  • System.Query
  • System.Xml.XLinq
  • PresentationFramework and WindowsBase (only XAML support)

The first Previews/Beta versions will be released alongside the 2.2 version of Mono, along with other juicy features such as Windows.Forms 2.0. And the current status of the project can be consulted in its SVN at the same time as it can be downloaded.
