GNU/Linux + GPE on HTC s200 (Prophet)
Lately I’ve been experimenting with my s200, until I finally got it. Well, rather, the cracks working on the linwizard project have achieved it, given the similarities of the HTC Wizard with the Prophet we can perfectly run the assembled kernel from one to the other.
We have been able to run the command line for a long time, but the first graphical environments such as GPE, Opie, OpenMoko and even Android are already beginning to move.
Today we are going to run the first GPE, although it is yes, remember that this is a BETA!!, everything you do is at your own risk and expense. Well, let’s start defining the steps:
- Download the distro from here.
- Unzip the GWIZARD directory on the PDA or SD/MMC card
- Simply run “Haret” and click “Run”
- When we get “linwizard login:” we can start the network interface (we have to have the PDA connected via USB)
- ifconfig usb0 10.100.0.2 up
- telnet 10.100.0.1
- login: root / pass: (blank, hit enter)
- We only need to start GPE:
- # startx &
We can now start playing with this environment:
Mount MMC/SD card
If we need more storage space to continue testing, we only have to have prepared our card holder before starting the distro. Thanks to the SD-Workaround initiative we can do it. We just have to follow the following steps:
- Download the zip and unzip it on the PDA (It is very important that it is on the PDA and not on the card)
- Start the “ns.exe”
- Load “install.ns”: File / Open / install.ns. You will get the message “Installation OK”
- Load “hideSD.ns” : File / Open / hideSD.ns
- Now you have to remove and insert the card again.
The next time you start linwizard you will be able to detect the card in /dev/mmcblk0. In the latest versions it detects it automatically, but in 0.2.0 and earlier you have to force it for it to work:
# cat /proc/partitions major minor #blocks name
1 0 20504 ram0 179 0 1990656 mmcblk0 179 1 78136 mmcblk0p1 179 2 1912512 mmcblk0p2
# cd /dev # mknod mmcblk0 b 179 0 # mknod mmcblk0p1 b 179 1 # mknod mmcblk0p2 b 179 2
# mkdir /mnt # mkdir /mnt/sda2 # mount /dev/mmcblk0p2 /mnt/sda2
Mount rootfs from an MMC/SD card
In the first section we have launched the Operating System from the initrd, but now we are going to try loading the kernel, but launch the rootfs that is copied to an SD or MMC card. In this case we are going to see how to launch it with OpenMoko.
First we prepare our card with two partitions, the first (mmcblk0p1) a FAT file system and the second partition (mmcblk0p2) must be EXT2. (Given that there are thousands of tutorials on how to do it, I refrain from detailing it)
- In the first one we will copy the Haret.exe, zImage and default.txt. From here we can start our GNU/Linux. The file that contains the configuration for Haret to start is default.txt so we will change the current one:
set MTYPE 1229 set KERNEL “zImage” set INITRD “initrd” set CMDLINE “root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk_size=20504 init=/linuxrc panic=30 video=omapfb:accel console=tty0” bootlinux
By the following:
set MTYPE 1229 set KERNEL “zImage” set CMDLINE “root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 ramdisk_size=20504 init=/linuxrc panic=30 video=omapfb:accel console=tty0” bootlinux
- In the second partition we must copy the uncompressed file system barehanded, such as this one, (although it is for the Motorola A780, it starts).
In the same way we will be able to do it with Android shortly.
