Although an article was written a while ago regarding this topic, I have decided to rewrite it based on the amount of changes that have occurred over these years and adapt it to some majority distribution. Preparing the environment

The first thing we must do is install the necessary packages to compile the SDKs, we do this using a package manager, either from the graphical environments or from the command line. Before this, there is an item that we cannot forget, since gcc 4.4 has become the default compiler, it presents us with a problem, since the SDKs are prepared to be compiled using gcc 3.4. But no problem, because everything is solvable, first we will add an old repository to our /etc/apt/sources.list, more specifically Jaunty.

INSTALLING IDE AND SDK

In my latest experiments with J2ME I have found that the font classes ( javax.microedition.lcdui.Font ) are quite short to obtain a fairly nice design.

It is based on three types (FACE_MONOSPACE, FACE_PROPORTIONAL, FACE_SYSTEM), three styles (STYLE_BOLD, STYLE_ITALIC, STYLE_PLAIN, STYLE_UNDERLINED) and three sizes (SIZE_LARGE, SIZE_MEDIUM,SIZE_SMALL) . This today is surpassed even by any Web editor.

We should not despair or think that ….. “Java is shabby and ugly” ….. since this depends more on the capabilities of the developer/designer than on the language itself that we are dealing with. That’s why the guys at 59Pixels have released a 59Fonts library, capable of saving us a lot of headaches.

I had been hearing about the simplicity of the WiiMoteLib for a while, but since I hadn’t put the Wii through my hands I hadn’t been able to touch them, I finally have the WiiMote at home, and obviously I had to start messing around. This is a simple code on how to connect and take some accelerometer readings, ideal for getting into the use of this device.

First we connect with any program Bluetooth device manager, to the WiiMote by pressing buttons 1 and 2 at the same time, and we connect it as a mouse, human interface, HID, … or whatever your manager calls it.

Since I haven’t written for a while, the best way I have found to get back on track is by remembering (in my opinion) the father of notation in programming. We are used to compiling our software against x86 systems, but… what happens when we want to run our software on other architectures? Basically, with a mere change of compiler if we have followed the POSIX, directives and little else we will be able to migrate our applications to the system we want.

For example, devices like the fonera, the Linksys WRT54GL, the ASUS WL500G, …… have this type of processor and if we want to compile against them we only have to follow the following simple steps:

What was my surprise when upon entering MSDN I found many Microsoft products with “N” at the end. Well no, don’t believe that Microsoft changes its name or releases optimized versions of its products.

[TIP&TRICK] Inserting videos in CommunityServer

By default, the Community Server does not have the possibility of inserting a YouTube link or something similar, basically because it does not recognize the tags of , , …. therefore if we want to insert videos we only have to edit the communityserver.config file in the root directory.

Windows 2008 Beta 3, regaining trust

After several months of testing Windows Vista it once again gives me a similar impression to the one I got with Windows ME, a little better, but not much, I see it as unstable, a lover of killing applications, or causing them to commit suicide, and most importantly of inferior usability, I will never get tired of repeating “The Office guys should give usability lessons to the View.”

But I took a little time and tried Windows 2008 without a virtual machine, (I have just piled up 100 positive adjectives to describe it). It follows the philosophy of Windows 2003, which in my opinion is “Let’s make something that works.” Even though it is Beta, it has stability to mention, it is possible to enable almost all, if not all, the graphical functionalities of Vista, and above all IT IS VERY FAST!!!.

This afternoon I compiled the latest version directly from the SVN of Monodevelop, and after playing with the latest features, I decided to put together a small application to show how it works under this environment.

This is a development under Mono + Gtk#, without having to create an entire tableau, since with the Fixed container we are allowed to drag them inside the panel, as if it were a Grid, and that is why I have reprogrammed this application again. To obtain the data we use a Webservice showing the weather for each city in real time.

We download the Perl Interpreter, since AWstats is written in Perl (ActivePerl-5.8.8.820-MSWin32-x86.msi, 12.4Mb)
We install Perl
Next we install AWStats by default, especially activate the Path
In the ISS administration, we went to properties on our website
In the Website tab, configure like this:
In Log properties, we must have at least these boxes checked:
Regarding the frequency of saving logs, one day is enough.
We apply the changes and restart IIS to be sure
We go to the path where Awstats was installed (C:\Program Files\AWStats\)
Once there we enter the path C:\Program Files\AWStats\wwwroot
From here we copy the cgi-bin, icon, css folders to the path where you want to have it in IIS (I have put them in: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\stats)

Always replacing the path with yours and the name of your site with the correct one. When that bat is executed, the statistics will be updated
We just need to schedule it as a scheduled task with the TaskManager, for example at 00:00 each night, so we will have it updated daily

These guys from Mono are non-stop, after having achieved full compatibility with the .NET 2.0 framework with version 1.2, they continue forward with the possibility of compiling within our favorite IDE. The truth is that this monster tool like VS2005 can do everything, and they have created an Add-in for this situation.
