OpenMoko, an alternative to Windows Mobile
I am the greatest defender of competition, both for my enemy and for me, basically because this implies that neither of us will stay asleep and we will advance technology, with the end user always being the greatest beneficiary. To this day Windows Mobile is the undisputed leader in mobile devices, but little by little rivals are being born that are not exactly something we should rule out (IPhone, Android, …..). Well, a reality is OpenMoko (it seems to me that there are not many Spanish speakers in the project ;) ).
!
The basis of this OS. is that it runs on GNU/Linux, it has good SDKs, today it is compatible with Mono, not a Compact Framework, but the big one. Basically, the distance that existed for developers between mobile devices and desktop applications is broken.
The project was initially intended for Neo 1973, but thanks to the flexibility of GNU/Linux, it has been ported to many others, such as HTC s100, Motorola A780, PALM TX, ….
From Windows
Download the emulator, and run the run.bat, it is based on the qemu emulator which, since it is ported for Win32, we will not have problems.
From GNU/Linux:
We prepare the system
apt-get install netpbm libsdl1.2-dev gcc-3.3
We download the latest version of SVN
svn checkout https://svn.openmoko.org/trunk/src/host/qemu-neo1973 cd qemu-neo1973
We configure and compile:
./configure –target-list=arm-softmmu # GCC 3.x will be required, see –cc= make
We download the latest ROM and Flash
openmoko/download.sh openmoko/flash.sh
We execute and click!!
arm-softmmu/qemu-system-arm -M gta01 -m 130 -mtdblock openmoko/openmoko-flash.image -kernel openmoko/openmoko-kernel.bin -usb -show-cursor
And now we can enjoy the system of our friend or enemy ;)
