When a project begins to have a size, or more than one person wants to work on it, the use of some type of control over the development becomes indispensable. Who did what?? where have you changed this?? When did you change the other thing? What have you done so that this does not work?? At that moment is when the need arises to install a version control system.

Let’s review the possible candidates:

  • Visual Studio Team Foundation: Possibly the best tool when developing with .NET, but paid, and when I say paid, it is paid, paid, paid, paid. An excessive price for any SME that has swamped our country.

  • CVS: Old sea dog, almost discarded by the community, except for the last Taliban. Still it has been a great system for a long time.

  • SVN: The great free alternative, with Apache/BSD license, is possibly the most used today by all types of developers. Which together with the excellent integration of trac make a very good couple.

  • GIT: Complex, and perhaps excessive for our approach. Just comment that it is the one we work with for the development of the GNU/Linux Kernel.

Therefore, after reviewing all of them, in terms of quality/price for the needs of an SME, we will opt for SVN. Now we will have to decide which client to use.

  • ankhSVN: Fully integrated with Visual Studio, and with excellent comments. Personally I cannot say the same, I have not had good experiences with him when trying to make him angry (putting him in difficult situations) Although he has passed version 1.0, I consider that he still has work to do until he reaches the level of his rival

  • tortoiseSVN: Fully integrated with our browser, with excellent qualities, and great at resolving conflicts (You can tell I love it). What would be the problem is if it were integrated with VS, well, after some modifications by Luis Molina on a vssettings, here I leave you a configuration so that you can perform the committee, update, … from the IDE.

  • Download: configuration (Installs from Tools / Import export configurations)

  • New Download (the other one gave some problems): configuration (Installs from Tools / Import export configurations)

By the way, at LaBloguera.NET we do not have version control, are you interested in setting up a kind of SourceForge, Codeplex, ….??? This way we would have a place to publish our projects in an organized manner.
