ASP.NET Server with RHEL+ Apache2 + Mono

    As we have already said on previous occasions, if we only want to develop with the But if what we are interested in is putting a server into production, we already have to configure our Apache so that it can launch the mod_mono module and thus run our .NET web applications under GNU/Linux.

    Although part of the free world tries to make a simple assembly of this type of servers difficult, below we are going to simplify this installation on Red Hat Enterprise Linux as much as possible.

The war of the N, beyond the Framework

Free software is not just a bunch of crazy people, who do not go beyond throwing command lines, but communities of restless minds, and since .NET is “the first great framework” and is a good product, the community has been created around it. Now we go a little beyond the framework, entering the life that is born near it.

Given the power that .NET gives us, tools are born around it to continue complementing it, of which we should also be very knowledgeable (at least of some).

Create your own Telnet client in C#

Due to the needs of a new project, I have been involved in the need to establish a telnet connection, so since we start investigating we do it from a Pocket PC, although the code I present is independent of the device, even Mono.

After reviewing several dotnettelnet type libraries, I opted for Minimalistic Telnet, basically because it was more adapted to my needs and it is much clearer what we intend to do at the learning level.

TheWeatherOnline

Continuing with the development of TheWeather, as I already explained in the previous article   it is an application developed in GTK# with MonoDevelop, in this version I have corrected multiple bugs, autotools have been included, and adapted the project for Monodevelop 0.13.1 .

But the main novelty is that it is accessible from Google Subversion, and the group is set up for anyone who dares to convert this mini-application that started as a demo, into a serious idea.

Race to Linux 2.0 and win a WII

IBM together with Novell and Mainsoft, have launched a new and interesting contest, you simply need to take applications in ASP.NET 2.0 and migrate them to Mono, Mainsoft’s Grasshopper 2.0 Technology Preview, Ruby, PHP, …. (I’ll stick with the first option which is going to be the easiest, juas, juas, ….).

The prize is a WII, and if you are a Windows developer, even a virtual machine kit is made available to you to compete.

What is the Race to Linux 2.0?
Register for the Race
Mark your calendars! Races start: Race #1 -Friday, March 23rd at 5:00 p.m. (PST) March 24th at 1:00 a.m. (GMT) Race #2 -Friday, March 30th at 9:00 a.m. (PST) March 30th at 5:00 p.m. (GMT) Race #3 -Friday, April 6th at 5:00 p.m. (PST) April 7th at 1:00 a.m. (GMT)

TheWeather, developing with MonoDevelop

This afternoon I compiled the latest version directly from the SVN of Monodevelop, and after playing with the latest features, I decided to put together a small application to show how it works under this environment.

This is a development under Mono + Gtk#, without having to create an entire tableau, since with the Fixed container we are allowed to drag them inside the panel, as if it were a Grid, and that is why I have reprogrammed this application again. To obtain the data we use a Webservice showing the weather for each city in real time.

Gtk# Installer & Mono, Add-in for Visual Studio 2005

These guys from Mono are non-stop, after having achieved full compatibility with the .NET 2.0 framework with version 1.2, they continue forward with the possibility of compiling within our favorite IDE. The truth is that this monster tool like VS2005 can do everything, and they have created an Add-in for this situation.

First with Gtk# Installer for .NET Framework Runtime with which we can have references to libraries such as

	* Mono.Cairo.dll
	* Mono.GetOptions.dll
	* Mono.Posix.dll
	* Mono.Security.dll
	* Novell.Directory.Ldap.dll

But it’s not over yet, we also have Mono Combined Experimental Installer which is the previous version of Gtk# but together with the Mono framework and the Add-in, you directly compile with VS!!

XNA on PS3 with Linux+Mono?

For those who do not know it XNA is the technology that Microsoft has released for the development of video games, facilitating the task with respect to the hard work that programming with DirectX meant. In this way, with a few minor modifications, the game will be compatible for both PC and XBOX 360.

Now let’s think… Would it be possible to bring it to the PS3? PS3 runs like Linux operating systems, there are even several HowTo on how to make it run Fedora, if we install Mono 1.2 on it we achieve full compatibility with all software that attacks Microsoft’s Framework 2.0, we are doing well, apparently we have just set up this console as a desktop machine, well one more step…… Mono.Xna !!!

Microsoft joins forces with Novell

Although I know that the news is a few weeks old, I can’t resist starting my adventures in the world of Blogs with something as beautiful as this pact that no one trusts. On the other hand, it gives me so much hope, given my desire to unite engineers (people who engineer, not necessarily graduates) under the same roof and that there are no Taliban, no dark side, or the like… (sniff, sniff, what an idealist I have become).

WPF in Mono

Are we going to have WPF also in Mono? of course, those responsible, the project Olive, who will be in charge of the implementation of:

  • Workflow APIs
  • System.Query
  • System.Xml.XLinq
  • PresentationFramework and WindowsBase (only XAML support)

The first Previews/Beta versions will be released alongside the 2.2 version of Mono, along with other juicy features such as Windows.Forms 2.0. And the current status of the project can be consulted in its SVN at the same time as it can be downloaded.
